This is a hands-on Chinese calligraphy class for travelers who want to do more than just look at China from the outside.
You will learn how to hold the brush, understand the basic evolution of Chinese characters, practice simple strokes, and create your own finished calligraphy work to take home.
The class takes place at Yanyuan Chinese Calligraphy Workshop in Xicheng District, Beijing, near Qianmen, Tiananmen Square, Dashilar, and the Palace Museum area.
No previous experience is needed. English instruction is available, and the class is designed for beginners, families, couples, solo travelers, and culture lovers.

Meet your teacher at the studio and get a short introduction to Chinese calligraphy and the class flow.
Learn the basic evolution of Chinese characters and the Four Treasures of the Study: brush, ink, paper, and inkstone.
Practice the five-finger brush technique, basic strokes, and writing rhythm with step-by-step guidance.
Choose and practice a meaningful Chinese character such as Fu, Le, He, Mei, or Long.
Write your final calligraphy piece on a Chinese-style fan or ornament and take it home after class.
For the 2-hour class, you will have more practice time and may learn Chinese cultural phrases or idioms such as “Unity of Heaven and Man” or “Great Virtue is Like Water.”
